About this calculator

An exponent counts repeated multiplication: 2⁵ means 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 = 32. The base is the number being multiplied; the exponent is how many times.

The rules extend beyond whole numbers: a negative exponent means the reciprocal (2⁻³ = 1/8), a zero exponent gives 1 for any non-zero base, and a fractional exponent is a root — x^(1/2) is the square root, x^(2/3) the cube root squared. Fractional exponents of negative bases have no real answer, so the calculator reports an error there.

Exponents grow deceptively fast: 2¹⁰ is barely a thousand, but 2²⁰ is over a million — the same doubling, ten steps on.
