About this calculator
An exponent counts repeated multiplication: 2⁵ means 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 = 32. The base is the number being multiplied; the exponent is how many times.
The rules extend beyond whole numbers: a negative exponent means the reciprocal (2⁻³ = 1/8), a zero exponent gives 1 for any non-zero base, and a fractional exponent is a root — x^(1/2) is the square root, x^(2/3) the cube root squared. Fractional exponents of negative bases have no real answer, so the calculator reports an error there.
Exponents grow deceptively fast: 2¹⁰ is barely a thousand, but 2²⁰ is over a million — the same doubling, ten steps on.

Frequently asked questions
What does an exponent mean?
An exponent counts how many times the base is multiplied by itself. 2⁵ means 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 = 32, where 2 is the base and 5 is the exponent.
What is any number raised to the power of zero?
One, for any non-zero base: 7⁰ = 1 and 100⁰ = 1. This keeps the exponent rules consistent, since dividing a power by itself (like 2³ ÷ 2³) gives both 1 and 2⁰.
What does a negative exponent mean?
It means the reciprocal of the positive power: x⁻ⁿ = 1 ÷ xⁿ. So 2⁻³ = 1 ÷ 2³ = 1 ÷ 8 = 0.125.
What is 2 to the power of 10?
1,024 — that is 2 multiplied by itself ten times. Doubling ten more times reaches 2²⁰ = 1,048,576, showing how quickly exponential growth compounds.
