About this calculator
The Devine formula estimates ideal body weight from height: 50 kg for men or 45.5 kg for women at 5 feet, plus 2.3 kg for every inch of height above that. Originally derived for drug dosing in the 1970s, it remains the most widely used ideal-weight rule of thumb.
A healthy weight is a range, not a single number — frame size, muscle mass and age all shift it. Clinicians often treat Devine ± 10% as the useful band, and the BMI calculator's healthy range (18.5–25) gives an independent cross-check that is often wider.
Treat the result as a reference point for conversation, not a target. For heights below 5 feet the formula's baseline applies without the per-inch addition.

Frequently asked questions
How is ideal body weight calculated?
The Devine formula starts at 50 kg for men or 45.5 kg for women at 5 feet tall and adds 2.3 kg for each inch above that. A 175 cm (5 ft 9 in) man works out to about 70.5 kg and a woman of the same height to about 66.0 kg.
Is there really one ideal weight?
No — a healthy weight is a range, not a point. Frame size, muscle mass and age all shift it, so clinicians often treat the Devine figure ± 10% as the useful band and cross-check it against the BMI healthy range.
Why is the ideal weight lower for women?
The Devine formula sets the 5-foot baseline 4.5 kg lower for women (45.5 kg versus 50 kg) but adds the same 2.3 kg per inch, so a woman's estimate stays 4.5 kg below a man's at every height. It reflects average body composition, not a target for any individual.
