About this calculator

Treadmills speak km/h (or mph); runners think in pace. The conversion is a reciprocal: pace per km is 3600 divided by speed in km/h, so 10 km/h is exactly 6:00 per kilometre, 12 km/h is 5:00, and 15 km/h is 4:00.

The mile pace follows by multiplying by 1.609: that same 10 km/h shows as 9:39 per mile. American treadmills marked in mph convert the other way — 6.0 mph is 9.7 km/h, near enough the classic "10-minute mile".

One honest treadmill footnote: without wind resistance, a flat belt is slightly easier than the road at the same speed. Many runners set a 1% incline to make treadmill pace feel like outdoor pace.

Frequently asked questions

What pace is 10 km/h on a treadmill?

Exactly 6:00 per kilometre, or 9:39 per mile. The rule: divide 3600 by the km/h figure to get seconds per kilometre.

What speed do I set for a 5:00/km pace?

12.0 km/h (about 7.5 mph). For 4:30/km set 13.3 km/h; for 4:00/km you need 15.0 km/h.

Should I add an incline on the treadmill?

A 1% incline roughly compensates for the missing air resistance at typical running speeds, making the effort comparable to flat road running. Below about 10 km/h the difference is small enough to ignore.
