About this calculator

Pace is time divided by distance: run 10 km in 55 minutes and you averaged 5:30 per kilometre (8:51 per mile). It's the number runners actually train and race by, because it transfers between distances in a way raw finish times don't.

Common check-points: a 5:41/km average brings a marathon home in 4 hours; 4:16/km breaks 3 hours; a 30-minute 5K is 6:00/km. Race distances for reference: 5K, 10K, half marathon 21.0975 km, marathon 42.195 km.

Real races rarely run at one pace — GPS wobble, hills and crowd surges all show up in the splits. Aim to hit your target pace as an average, and treat the first kilometre's adrenaline pace with suspicion.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out my running pace?

Divide total time by distance. 55 minutes over 10 km is 5.5 minutes — 5:30 — per kilometre. To convert to pace per mile, multiply pace per km by 1.609: 5:30/km ≈ 8:51/mile.

What pace do I need for a 4-hour marathon?

5:41 per kilometre (9:09 per mile) held for 42.195 km. For a sub-3:30 it's 4:58/km, and the classic sub-3 requires 4:16/km.

Is pace or speed more useful for running?

Runners think in pace (minutes per km or mile) because watches, race plans and splits use it; speed in km/h is the treadmill's language. They're reciprocals — 6:00/km is exactly 10 km/h.
