About this calculator

Distance is steps × stride length. At a typical walking stride of 75 cm, the famous 10,000 steps come to 7.5 km (about 4.7 miles); a 2,000-step stroll is 1.5 km.

Stride length varies with height: a common estimate is height × 0.41 for walking, so someone 170 cm tall strides about 70 cm and someone 190 cm about 78 cm. For a personal figure, walk a measured 100 metres, count your steps, and divide.

The 10,000-step target itself is marketing heritage — it began as a 1960s Japanese pedometer slogan. Research finds health benefits climbing steeply up to about 7,000–8,000 steps a day and flattening after that, so the round number is a fine goal but not a magic one.

Frequently asked questions

How far is 10,000 steps?

About 7.5 km or 4.7 miles at an average 75 cm stride. With a shorter 65 cm stride it's 6.5 km; long-legged walkers at 85 cm cover 8.5 km.

How many steps are in a kilometre?

Roughly 1,300 steps at an average walking stride (100,000 cm ÷ 75 cm). Running lengthens the stride, dropping the count to around 1,000 steps per km.

How do I measure my stride length?

Walk a known distance — 100 m of a running track works well — counting steps, then divide distance by count. As a quick estimate, multiply your height by 0.41.
