About this calculator
The tip is a percentage of the bill before tax; add it to the bill and divide by the number of people to get each person's share. In the United States, 15–20% is customary for table service, with 20% increasingly the norm for good service.
Customs differ widely elsewhere — in much of Europe a service charge is already included, and in some countries tipping is not expected at all — so adjust the percentage to the local convention.

Frequently asked questions
Do you tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Custom says the pre-tax subtotal, since the tip rewards service, not the tax. In practice many people tip on the total for simplicity — on a typical restaurant bill the difference is under a dollar or two either way.
What is a quick way to work out 20% in your head?
Move the decimal point one place left to get 10%, then double it. On an $85 bill: 10% is $8.50, so 20% is $17. For 15%, take the 10% figure and add half of it again.
How much should you tip in the United States?
15–20% is customary for table service, with 20% increasingly the norm for good service. Counter service and takeout are discretionary; delivery usually 10–15% with a sensible minimum on small orders.
