About this calculator
Speaking time is word count divided by pace. Presenters average around 130 words per minute — slower than conversation, because pauses, emphasis and audience reaction all cost time. At that pace a 1,000-word script runs about 7 minutes 41 seconds.
The classic planning figures: a 5-minute talk wants roughly 650 words, a 15-minute conference slot about 2,000, and a 30-minute keynote 3,900. Nervous speakers speed up, so scripts timed at exactly the slot length tend to finish early on stage — write 10% short and breathe.
The silent reading time is included for comparison: readers average about 238 words per minute, roughly twice speaking pace, which is why a page that reads in a minute takes two to say.
