About this calculator

Light covers 299,792.458 km every second — seven and a half times around the Earth — and yet space is so large that even light crawls across it. Divide any distance by that speed and you get the universe's minimum possible delay.

Those delays are practical, not academic. Mission control cannot joystick a Mars rover: at closest approach a radio command takes 3 minutes to arrive (and over 22 minutes when Mars is across the Sun), so rovers drive themselves between instructions. Voyager 1's data arrives after almost a full day in flight.

The same numbers mean looking out is looking back in time: you see the Sun as it was 8.3 minutes ago, and Proxima Centauri as it was 4¼ years ago.
