About this calculator
Travel time is simply distance divided by speed — the fun is in the scale. Distances here are closest approaches (the Moon and Sun at their average distance), so these are best-case straight-line trips: no launch windows, no curved transfer orbits, no slowing down at the other end.
Real missions can't fly straight or maintain one speed, which is why actual Mars missions take about seven months rather than the two your car dashboard math suggests at Voyager speed. Spacecraft coast along elliptical transfer orbits chosen to save fuel, not time.
The comparison speeds are real: 100 km/h is motorway driving, 900 km/h an airliner cruise, 39,900 km/h the record set by Apollo 10 returning from the Moon, 61,200 km/h Voyager 1's cruise, and 690,000 km/h the Parker Solar Probe — the fastest object humans have built.
