About this calculator

US sales tax is added at the register: multiply the price by your combined rate and add it on. At 7%, a $100 purchase costs $107.

Unlike VAT or GST countries, the US has no national rate — sales tax is set by states, counties and cities, and the combined rate is what you actually pay. State base rates range from 0% (Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon; Alaska has no state rate but allows local ones) to over 7%, and local additions push combined rates in some cities past 10%. Check your local rate and enter the combined figure.

What's taxable also varies: many states exempt groceries and prescription drugs, and some run tax-free holidays. Online purchases are generally taxed at the delivery address's rate.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate sales tax on a purchase?

Multiply the price by the combined rate, then add it to the price. At a 7% rate a $100 purchase carries $7 of tax, for $107 at the register.

Is there a single national US sales tax rate?

No. The US sets sales tax at the state, county and city level, so the rate you pay is the combined total for the location of the sale. Some states have no sales tax at all, while combined rates in a few cities exceed 10%.

How do I find the pre-tax price from a total that already includes tax?

Divide the total by one plus the rate as a decimal. A $107 total at 7% came from a $100 price, because 107 ÷ 1.07 = 100; the $7 difference is the tax.

Is sales tax charged before or after a discount?

Generally after: sales tax applies to the price you actually pay, so a store coupon or markdown lowers the taxable amount. Manufacturer rebates are sometimes treated differently and taxed on the full price, depending on the state.
