Unlike VAT or GST countries, the US has no national rate — sales tax is set by states, counties and cities, and the combined rate is what you actually pay. State base rates range from 0% (Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon; Alaska has no state rate but allows local ones) to over 7%, and local additions push combined rates in some cities past 10%.
