About this calculator

VAT (value-added tax) is charged as a percentage on top of a net price. To add VAT, multiply the net amount by the rate and add the result: at the UK standard rate of 20%, a £100 net price carries £20 of VAT for a £120 gross total.

Different goods and services attract different rates — the UK also has a reduced 5% rate and a zero rate — and rates vary by country, so set the rate to match your case.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove VAT from a gross price?

Divide the VAT-inclusive price by 1.2 at the 20% standard rate. A £150 gross price is £125 net, so £25 is VAT — equivalently one sixth of the gross, since 20/120 simplifies to 1/6.

What are the UK VAT rates?

The standard rate is 20% and covers most goods and services. A reduced 5% rate applies to things like domestic energy and children's car seats, and a zero rate covers most food, books and children's clothing.

How much VAT is on £100?

At the 20% standard rate, £100 net carries £20 of VAT for a £120 gross total. At the reduced 5% rate the VAT is £5, giving £105.
