About this calculator
MwSt (Mehrwertsteuer) is Germany's value-added tax. The standard rate is 19%: a €100 net price carries €19 of MwSt for a €119 total. To add MwSt, multiply the net amount by the rate and add the result.
A reduced 7% rate applies to essentials including most food, books and newspapers, local public transport and cultural events. Some services — medical care, most rents — are exempt entirely. Set the rate field to match your case.
German businesses charge MwSt (shown as USt on invoices) and reclaim input tax through their Umsatzsteuervoranmeldung; the Bundesfinanzministerium publishes the authoritative rules.

Frequently asked questions
What is the German MwSt rate?
The standard rate is 19%, so a €100 net price becomes €119. A reduced 7% rate applies to most food, books, newspapers, local public transport and cultural events.
How do I remove MwSt from a gross price?
Divide the gross by 1.19 at the standard rate: a €119 gross price is €100 net, so €19 is MwSt. Divide by 1.07 for the 7% reduced rate.
How much is 19% MwSt on €50?
It is €9.50, for a €59.50 total. At the reduced 7% rate the same €50 net carries €3.50, giving €53.50.
