About this calculator

TVA (taxe sur la valeur ajoutée) is France's value-added tax. The standard rate is 20%: a €100 net price carries €20 of TVA for a €120 total. To add TVA, multiply the net amount by the rate and add the result.

France runs several reduced rates: 10% for restaurants, transport and home renovation; 5.5% for most food, books and energy; and 2.1% for reimbursable medicines and newspapers. Set the rate field to match the goods or services in question.

French businesses charge TVA on sales and deduct the TVA they pay on purchases through their déclaration de TVA; the Direction générale des Finances publiques publishes the authoritative rates.

Frequently asked questions

What is the French TVA rate?

The standard rate is 20%, so a €100 net price becomes €120. Reduced rates of 10%, 5.5% and 2.1% apply to restaurants and transport, most food and books, and certain medicines and newspapers respectively.

How do I remove TVA from a gross price?

Divide the gross by 1.20 at the standard rate: a €120 gross price is €100 net, so €20 is TVA. Use 1.10, 1.055 or 1.021 for the reduced rates.

How much is 5.5% TVA on €50?

It is €2.75, for a €52.75 total. At the 20% standard rate the same €50 net carries €10 of TVA, giving €60.
