About this calculator
Square footage is length times width, both in feet: a 20 × 15 room is 300 square feet. For rooms that aren't simple rectangles, split the floor into rectangles, calculate each, and add them up — an L-shaped room is just two rectangles.
Flooring, paint and rental listings all speak in square feet, but suppliers sometimes quote in square yards (divide by 9) or square meters (multiply by 0.0929) — both conversions are shown below.
When ordering materials, buy more than the bare area: flooring typically needs 5–10% extra for cuts and waste, more for diagonal layouts or patterned tile. The tile calculator handles that waste factor for you.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the square footage of a room?
Multiply the length by the width, with both measured in feet. A room 12 feet by 14 feet is 168 square feet; for rooms that aren't rectangular, divide the floor into rectangles, work out each one, and add the results.
How many square feet is a 12x12 room?
A 12 by 12 foot room is 144 square feet (12 × 12). That is a common bedroom size, and it works out to 16 square yards or about 13.4 square meters.
How do I convert square feet to square yards or square meters?
Divide square feet by 9 to get square yards, or multiply by 0.0929 to get square meters. So 300 square feet is about 33.3 square yards or roughly 27.9 square meters.
How do I measure the square footage of an L-shaped room?
Split the L into two rectangles, calculate the area of each, and add them together. Any irregular floor plan can be broken into rectangles this way and summed for the total.
