About this calculator
Divide the area by the coverage of one tile and add waste: this calculator builds in 10% for cuts, breakage and pattern matching, which suits a straightforward grid layout. Diagonal layouts, herringbone and rooms with many corners run 15% or more — and keeping a few spares for future repairs is always worth it, since dye lots vary between batches.
A 12" × 12" tile covers exactly one square foot; an 18" × 18" covers 2.25; large-format 24" × 24" covers 4. Plank tiles are listed by their coverage too.
Measure the true area to be tiled — for walls, height × width per wall, added up. Grout, spacers and adhesive scale with the same area, so the tile count doubles as the shopping reference for the whole job.
