About this calculator

South Africa's VAT is 15% on most goods and services: a R100 net price carries R15 of VAT for a R115 total. To add VAT, multiply the net amount by the rate and add the result; to extract the VAT inside an inclusive price, multiply it by 15 and divide by 115.

A basket of essentials is zero-rated to protect low-income households — including brown bread, maize meal, rice, vegetables, eggs and milk — and exports are zero-rated too. Financial services and residential rent are exempt.

VAT-registered vendors charge output VAT and deduct input VAT through their VAT201 returns; SARS publishes the authoritative rules and the current zero-rated list.

Frequently asked questions

What is South Africa's VAT rate?

It is 15% on most goods and services, so a R100 net price becomes R115. A basket of essentials such as brown bread, maize meal and vegetables is zero-rated instead.

How do I remove VAT from an inclusive price?

Multiply the VAT-inclusive amount by 15 and divide by 115, or divide by 1.15 to get the net. A R115 gross price contains R15 of VAT and R100 net.

How much VAT is on R500?

At the 15% rate it is R75, for a R575 total.
